Several major Medicare Advantage carriers are pulling back for 2027, and millions of members will need to pay attention to their mail this fall because many plans are being discontinued.
Here’s a summary of some of the carriers that are making changes, why, and what to do if you’re affected.
The Big Picture
Industry watchers expect 2027 to bring another round of broad benefit reductions, with a recent survey finding nearly 70% of health plan leaders expect their Medicare Advantage packages to be less generous next year.
This follows a rough couple of years. One analysis found that roughly 10% of Medicare Advantage members faced forced disenrollment heading into 2026, and Vermont was hit hardest, with 92% of policyholders in some counties losing their plan entirely.
Insurers Cutting Back for 2027
Humana
Humana is exiting plans covering roughly 600,000 members nationwide, about 8% of its total Medicare Advantage business. Most of the affected plans are rated 3.5 stars or lower, and the company expects to recapture around 40% of those members into other Humana plans it still offers.
Molina Healthcare
Molina is dropping its individual Medicare Advantage MAPD Plans, affecting about 99,100 members across roughly 20 states. The company is now focusing exclusively on its dual-eligible Medicare and Medicaid plans, which are not affected.
Presbyterian Health Plan
This Albuquerque-based nonprofit is discontinuing most of its Medicare Advantage plans for 2027, affecting about 30,000 members across New Mexico, after reporting a significant financial loss on its Medicare Advantage business.
Clear Spring Health
Clear Spring already completed its exit earlier this year, shutting down Medicare Advantage entirely on June 1 and affecting roughly 12,000 members across Illinois, Georgia, and Colorado. Members had a CMS-guaranteed window to pick new coverage through July 31; anyone who missed it defaulted to Original Medicare.
Providence Health Plan
Providence is closing its health plan business entirely after a planned sale of its Medicare Advantage line fell through. The shutdown affects more than 64,000 Medicare Advantage members, mostly in Oregon, along with its commercial and Medicaid business. Current coverage continues through the end of 2026.
UnitedHealthcare
UnitedHealthcare will discontinue some Medicare Advantage plans for 2027, affecting approximately 390,000 members. It will offer 852 Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, compared with 846 in 2026, as it discontinues 34 PPO plans and adds 40 special needs plans. Its standard plans will no longer be offered in 140 counties, but most of those counties will still have UnitedHealthcare special needs plans. It will not offer Medicare Advantage plans in 34 counties, including Wyoming. For many beneficiaries, there are other UnitedHealthcare plans that can be joined if yours has been discontinued.
Aetna
Aetna will offer Medicare Advantage plans in 41 states in 2027, compared with 43 states in 2026. It will not offer plans in Maryland or New Hampshire, and its standard plans will no longer be offered in 123 counties. Aetna will offer 654 Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, compared with 642 in 2026, as it discontinues 20 PPO plans and adds 29 chronic condition special needs plans. As with UHC, there are other Aetna plans that you can check out if yours has been discontinued.
Centene (Wellcare)
Centene will offer 210 Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, down from 303. It is pulling its standard plans from 344 counties and exiting Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. In Nevada and Ohio, it will offer only special needs plans.
Elevance Health
Elevance Health will offer 308 Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, down from 345, with most of the reduction coming from dual-eligible plans. It is pulling its standard plans from 56 counties and exiting South Carolina.
Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)
HCSC, which purchased Cigna’s Medicare business in 2025, will offer 200 Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, down from 283. It is exiting Connecticut, Kansas, Montana, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, D.C. for 2027.o a Medicare Advantage HMO plan in 2027.
Also Worth Knowing: Senior Care Plus (Nevada)
In northern Nevada, Hometown Health’s Senior Care Plus is becoming Kaiser Permanente following a joint venture between Kaiser and Renown Health. Current Senior Care Plus coverage continues through 2026, but Kaiser’s new 2027 Medicare Advantage plans require active enrollment rather than an automatic transfer.
This Follows a Similar Wave in 2026
This pattern isn’t new. Roughly 2.6 million enrollees were affected by insurer exits heading into 2026, and the pattern has simply continued into the 2027 bid cycle.

What to Do If Your Plan Is Affected
Step 1: Read your mail.
Don’t ignore anything that looks like a plan notice this fall. It will tell you whether your plan is changing, ending, or staying the same.
Step 2: Compare your options during AEP.
You’re not required to accept whatever replacement plan your carrier suggests. Compare Medicare Advantage and Part D options from any carrier available in your area.
Step 3: Know your Medigap rights.
If your plan is being discontinued, you likely qualify for guaranteed-issue rights to buy a Medicare Supplement plan without medical underwriting, typically from 60 days before your coverage ends to 63 days after.
Step 4: Think about who’s actually being paid to help you.
With commission freezes now part of the picture, it’s worth working with a licensed insurance agent who compares plans without bias.
